Remaking The Thin Man

I'm going to let you in on one of my worst kept secrets, I don't generally have a problem with remakes. I'm not a huge fan either. I'd say I'm mostly ambivalent about remakes. Occasionally, they give an interesting and fresh new take on an old idea, more often though, they're a quick way to grab for a little cash. Don't get me wrong, I'd still rather see an original idea than a rehash of something I've seen before, but I understand the desire to play it safe and stick with a known quantity.

I bring this up because I read something earlier:

Johnny Depp May Remake 'The Thin Man' with Rob Marshall - The Moviefone Blog

The film is the four-time Oscar nominated 'The Thin Man,' and according to the rumor mill, Johnny Depp wants to remake it with 'Pirates of the Caribbean 4' and 'Chicago' helmer Rob Marshall.

According to Vulture, Depp is "aggressively courting" Marshall to direct him in a remake of the film with Warner Bros. As of now, there's no script, but they claim that Depp is in full pursuit of making this passion a reality.

Ok. Depp is certainly a fine and interesting actor, but is he the type that could play Nick Charles properly? And who would play Nora Charles?

As a big fan of both Dashiell Hammet's novel and the movie The Thin Man. It's gotten me to thinking. Who in today's Hollywood could play these roles. And that's setting aside the more interesting question of how you could even make this movie in today's politically correct environment. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that that could be a whole post unto itself!

William Powell was, really, an almost perfect choice for the role of Nick Charles. In fact, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for the role! This is where you fall into the remake trap though, these were iconic roles. Both Powell and Myrna Loy were perfectly cast and had great chemistry together (the two were a staple in the 30s and early forties staring in all 6 Thin Man films and 8 other films as well). There is no way to remake a movie like this without inevitable (and probably harsh) comparison to the original.

This is getting away from me here though. What actor in Hollywood today could exude the wit and charm required for Nick Charles? We need someone about the right age, late 30s to early 40s. I'll refrain from saying Keanu Reeves (though I would certainly want to see him try!). Hugh Laurie I think could do it, though he's just outside the age range I'm thinking of. You know who I think would be very good in the role though? Nathan Fillion. Captain Tight Pants himself. I think this would be right in his wheelhouse.

That gets us halfway there. It also gets us to the harder question. Who on Earth could play Nora Charles? In this case we need someone...around let's say 30. Drew Barrymore would have the right look, and she's only 35...not a bad choice, but not the right choice. Zoe Saldana would make for an interesting choice. Katie Holmes perhaps as well, but...still, no. Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway or Rachel McAdams maybe? No. Rachel Weisz would be a good choice, but if I'm eliminating Barrymore based on age, then Weisz is out too (sadly, since she's a large part of what made The Brothers Bloom so fun and charming, IMO). No, I'm going to go with Zooey Deschanel here I think. I'm just playing a hunch here, but I really think she could come closest to pulling the role off.

The question I now pose to you is, how far off do you think I am? And, more interestingly, who would YOU chose for the roles of Nick and Nora Charles?

Is Johnny Depp insane ? Why doesn`t he remake Uncle Harry or something else that was ruined the first time around ?
This is probably as close as anyone can get to blasphemy without actually taking the Lord's name in vain! You cannot remake "The Thin Man"! It's not something that you can do and get away with. One can of course try, but the end result will be something that tries very hard to be funny/witty, is clearly ripping off "The Thin Man", yet comes short of BEING "The Thin Man".

Does anyone remember "The Thin Man" TV series? Probably not! Because it wasn't "The Thin Man". It didn't have Powell and Loy and Asta (or, whatever, Skippy) and hard as it tried it couldn't capture the essence of what made those movies work so well.

These movies (and these actors) are still popular today. People still talk about them, watch them, and buy the DVDs. There is no point in re-making a movie that manages to speak to audiences 70-some years later. Had it been forgotten, it might have made some (albeit very little) sense. But people love these movies. Why remake them? Why mess with something that's already perfect and, apparently, ageless?

I hope they'll scrape the idea and just do something original instead. If they can, as Hollywood seems wholly incapable of making a movie that has a single original idea in it. :(

I think Nathan Fillion is a pretty interesting choice actually!

A great deal of the casting is going to be down to whether the remake is going to be a period piece or modern reworking. Do I see Mr Depp as Nick Charles frankly no, I cannot really tell why not it is just a nagging thought at the back of my brain.

Nathan Fillion would seem to be a good choice although I think Zooey Deschanel, as lovely as she is; has that startled deer look going on. I think there is another better mix, David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel. While their ages may be beginning to fall outside of the ranges you have suggested they would immediately bring something to any production, a great on-screen presence together. Boreanaz can do the straight edged comedy needed for a Thin Man remake, while Deschanel can offer sophistication and intelligence expected in a 21st century movie female lead.
I think Nathan FiIlion would be a great Nick! I also think Paul Rudd would do well. As for Nora, my first thought was Amy Adams who visited a similar character excellently in Mrs Pettigrew Lives For Day. I also think Carey Mulligan would be great casting though she is on the young side. I have a cat who thinks she is a dog and would do well as Asta.

They already made The Thin Man... it was called Hart to Hart...
I don't mean to be cantankerous, but I find most of your choices way off base to play both parts. I especially don't see Nathan Fillion as Nick Charles. Hugh Laurie comes close. I'm not sure he's too old. Make Nora somewhat older, too. Why does everyone have to be in their 30s and 40s. What bothered me about most of your choices is that they are very young and very American. None are particularly witty. I like most of the actors you suggested, I just don't see them in the part. They are all too American and too common. They don't have the sense of wit and ability to banter that Powell and Loy mastered so well. Kate Winslet might be an interesting Nora if Rachel Weisz didn't do it. Clive Owen might work with either one. They are interesting....and difficult....parts to cast right. Especially among today's actors who are so common and down to earth when the characters call for a sense of formality and decorum but still great humor.

Powell always played his parts with a bit of a smirk (though he could be emotionally deep as well - see "Mr. Roberts"), and it was really the chemistry with Loy that made the thin man series fun. Could Brad and Angela pull it off? They had good chemistry in Mr and Mrs Smith. And I think they could get the timing down.
Zooey Deschanel is too "cutesy" and has a feeling of the alternative music type. How about Maggie Gyllenhaal or Ginnifer Goodwin who both played a good Nora Charles type in "Mona Lisa Smile." Nick and Nora have classy breeding but were not afraid to get dirty and mingle with the common man. And someone less known like Goodwin doesn't come with a popular image for us to try to ignore (like Barrymore or Deschanel).
How about Michael Weatherly from NCIS? He can do quirky pretty well! I like Amy Adams as Nora.
A remake of "The Thin Man" would never work, regardless of who is cast. The days of witty repartee are long gone. Now you have to dig through a lot of crap in the quagmire of the gross-out and/or stupid genre to find a gem like "Something About Mary" or "The Hangover." Wit is for grown ups not arrested adolescents or emerging adults stuck in the puerile humor of the locker room or bathroom.
In reality, the Thin Man has already been remade. It was just done well and generally enough that no one noticed.

OK, maybe not remade, but 1993's "Undercover Blues", with Kathleen Turner and Dennis Quaid, is very much an heir to the Thin Man movies. Married couple, supposedly retired from crime fighting, caught up in a case, fighting with sophistication. They took the idea, the feeling of the characters, and made their own movie with them.

(If there is any doubt, Turner narrates the Myrna Loy documentary on the DVD collection.)

I have no problem with Depp filling William Powell's shoes. I'd say Charlize Theron would be a great match for his other half.
The milieu doesn't work in our current context.

We don't view the idle rich the same way.

We don't view drinking the same way.

"The Thin Man" works as a product of its time.
I think either Nathan Fillion or Michael Weatherly would be great. As someone who own a set of the "The Thin Man.." on CD the actor should be able to have quick timing, be witty, charming and have a 'twinkle' in his eye. Depp no offense is no Nick Charles. I don't know who play "Nora". Aren't there anymore creative artist or writers anymore, does everything have to be copied?? What happen to original thoughts?

I think Pontepy has a point but I found, when I was posting the Paul Rudd Suggestion, I was trying to get away from the huge name combos like Clooney/Winslet yet keep it realistic. I guess an important bit of information we don't have is the time period they are using for the film. Can they keep up all the drinking and make it contemporary? I was assuming not and that it would be set in the time it was written which limits the field somewhat. Having minority actors in the roles would be odd if its set it he original period but If we decide we can open up the field, which is in line with the playful nature of the film, then Chiwetel Ejiofor would be awesome, he always is.

As for whether it should be remade.........sure why not. As long as the brilliant original is always there for us to enjoy they can remake Citizen Cane starring teletubbies for all I care.
As Nick was an "everyday" man from the streets of New York, and Nora was a socialite from New York, Nathan Fillion is a very good choise. Zooey Deschanel, drew Barrymore, Katie Holmes, and Natalie Portman are about as far from NY socialite as you can get. They are all the girl next door type. You need an elietist who doesn't mind getting down and dirty. Cate Blanchett is the right type. Angelina Jolie is probably the best bet if you want to put butts in the seats.

I have a hard time seeing a Thin Man remake working in today's movie environment, but Johnny Depp isn't such a bad choice. I'm guessing he could easily pull off the mix of debonair and street-smarts that Powell so masterfully exhibited in the original. It's that character angle that make me think that Nathan Fillion, as much as I enjoy his work, which is a lot, is just not right for the part. He's shown he can do upper-class smarm, but I haven't seen debonair yet. David Boreanaz is too beefy. He'd actually make a pretty good Guild (the homicide dick that Nick runs circles around). The other choices mentioned above are too boyish. Rudd and Weatherly don't have the gravitas as actors that Powell had. Again, Depp could easily find that.

As for Nora, Deschanel is not a bad choice. I don't agree that Nora can't be "cutesy". After all, Myrna Loy was certainly the epitome of cute: she's not a spectacular beauty, but few would deny her obvious appeal. I think Deschanel is actually more attractive in absolute terms. The one concern is whether she could go toe-to-toe with Johnny as Nick. Does she have the force of personality to hold her own in that bout? Hard to say, but that's the quality that Nora really needs.

A remake seems like a pointless, cringe-worthy exercise; however, after they've spent their tens of millions it will open and be forgotten in the same week. No harm will be done; the original will remain an eternal classic.
Wow, I love Johnny Depp but I also love the Thin Man, and I don't think I can see him in this role. I think you did a good job of casting the two, personally I LOVE Zooey Deschanel, but I think if they were to cast Nick at all, Robert Downey Jr. would be a good possibility. Also, Amy Adams would be a good back-up if Zooey couldn't do it. But as much as I would love to see another take on this fabulous movies, you really shouldn't mess with the classics.
as much as it will upset the purists, as long as you're going hollywood, bring out the pros. clooney is older than your stated age range, but someone in their 30's/40's in modern times does not have the wit, experience or slight world-weariness to pull off nick. clooney's danny ocean, as well as his up in the air character and clooney as clooney have the same quality of powell's nick in being able to take a half step back and be both amused by and observant of the eccentrics around them. they both have (had) the ability to mix with the colorful characters while maintaining their elegance. and julia roberts has both the playfulness and the chemistry with clooney to make it fun.
(cont. from above)

i would not have them actually play nick and nora charles though. be very meta, have them aware of how much their lives are like nick and nora, but different names, slightly different backgrounds. perhaps clooney's character is like dennis farina's real story...big city real cop who became a consultant on police shows and movies and transitioned into acting. take that base, and now he's a well off, bored movie star missing the challenge of solving a crime. that setting would also be a fun opportunity for some cameos with some of clooney's chums playing themselves.

In order to remake the thin man you would have to allow for a modern very frequently drinking well-off couple. The drinking would have to be toned down sort of like they did the smoking in the American remake of The Cracker. If you do that you immediately lose the charm of the film. Second, it isn't enough to get two actors that appear to *look* like Myrna Loy and William Powell. The two have to be so adept at throwing one-liners it has to be like butter. Also, the two have to work well snipping at each other. Then there is the scene in which Nick Charles (Powell) *knocks out* Loy! Good luck making that work without reversing the roles in today's world. ;) Pretty tough order. First, Depp can be funny. He is *not* good enough at one liners. Robin Williams could pull off the one liners but he is too old. I am hard pressed from the start to find someone the right age (if restricting to around thirty) and can throw the one liners like Charles. As for Nora Charles, Drew Barrymore could pull off the role. She is 35, but let us not squabble. I don't mean scrunching the nose like Loy, but playing the reparte would work for her. The rest I cannot think of one who could do the job. Good luck. The best you will get is a peari that doesn't work close to the give and take speed of Powell and Loy and that won't work, and the humor will be watered down by political correctness. Just my opinion from someone who owns *two* dvd copies of the film and will probably do the same in blu-ray eventually.
I love the Boreanaz/Deschanel idea. I think Debra Messing would be an excellent Nora, also. I love Zooey, but that is a bad choice.
Depp could probably be a good Nick, but Robert Downey, Jr. could nail it.
Just don't do it. Please. And Zooey Deschanel is no Myrna Loy!
I am getting sick of all these remakes. It's one thing to do new film versions of Shakespeare's or Oscar Wilde's plays, or even "Of Mice and Men", providing you don't screw them up, but remaking a film that became famous for having a perfect cast, and which received great reviews in addition, is a stupid, blasphemous, and greedy idea. It's just done because today's filmmakers would rather re-use an idea that has already been tried successfully instead of looking for new ones, not because more modern actors can play the roles better. I don't want to see "The Thin Man" with different actors, nor "The Maltese Falson", nor "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre", nor "Singin' In the Rain", nor for that matter, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid".
